LA CASA DE ATRÁS
PERFORMANCE-FILM
Towards the end of last year, the Cuban artist Alexeir Diaz Bravo staged a performance. He created a sculpture of a deer with a human face and placed it at the end of a black corridor. At the front of the corridor lay a bow and arrows.
He invited me to film the performance. At the Cavete Club, where the event took place, there were signs about filming, but people hardly noticed the cameras themselves, even though we didn’t really try to hide them. To be honest, neither the artist nor I were sure whether people would actually shoot at the cute deer with a face. But in the end, I hadn’t even managed to switch on all the cameras before the first shot was made. After that, the stream of arrows hardly stopped.
This footage was difficult to edit. And, I think, it’s no easier to watch. But in the end, in my view, it turned out to be a very powerful and meaningful performance. At least, it made a huge impression on me personally.
This is a far cry from what I usually do in my projects. But I found it a precise and painful statement of contemporary art. Thank you, Alexeir, for the opportunity to document this!
